No More Shame, Every Marriage Has Conflict with Efrat Turk, LMHC

Every stage of life has its own unique challenges. Marriage is one of those stages that tends to bring out lots of shame. Not only because we think others have it together when we don’t, but also because we feel guilt and shame when we can’t connect the way we dreamed we would - you know those fairy tale endings... they don’t show you what happens AFTER the wedding. They don’t show you how Cinderella’s childhood trauma, abandonment and neglect plays out in her marriage with the handsome prince. In this recording of our Mental Health Monday live interview with Efrat Turk (aired on Dec 23, 2019) she gives us a bit of perspective on the challenges of marriage, insights into how EFT* is used to help re-connect couples using attachment theory, and helps to break stigmas so we can alleviate some shame. Efrat Turk LMHC has received her Masters in Mental Health Counseling from Queens College. She maintains a private practice in Queens and Brooklyn, while also working at Sephardic Bikur Cholim as their primary couples therapist. Efrat is also Certified in Emotion Focused Therapy and her work focuses primarily on relationships, anxiety, trauma, and depression. * Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) is a family of approaches to psychotherapy including elements of experiential therapy (such as Gestalt therapy), systemic therapy, and attachment theory. EFT is based on the premise that emotions are connected to needs, and therefore emotions have an adaptive potential that, if activated and worked through, can help with self-regulation and repair interpersonal relationships. Infertility & Grief Are NOT Mental Illnesses with Dr. Aimee Baron

On this episode of #mentalheathmonday (aired on February 17th, 2020) we hosted a special guest, Dr. Aimee Baron who shared all about why she started her organization "I Was Supposed to Have a Baby" ( @iwassupposedtohaveababy on Instagram) and why infertility and grief (specifically post miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss) are not mental illnesses in and of themselves. This tremendous challenge CAN present some mental health alarm bells, but it is so important to not confuse these struggles with mental illness. This understanding can help inform the way we show up for ourselves and others who are trying to navigate this very challenging grief filled journey. Aimee Baron MD, FAAP, is the founder and executive director of I Was Supposed to Have a Baby, a nonprofit organization that utilizes social media to support Jewish individuals and families as they are struggling to have a child. It provides a warm and nurturing space for those going through infertility, pregnancy loss, infant loss, surrogacy or adoption, in addition to connecting those families to resources in the Jewish community at large. Dr. Baron was formerly the Director of Innovation and Growth at @nechamacomfort , and has also worked as an Attending Pediatrician in the Newborn Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital before taking a leave of absence after her third miscarriage. Foundation of Healthy Relationships With Sheina Schochet

Foundation of Healthy Relationships With Sheina Schochet

Any healthy relationship begins with a healthy relationship with "self". In this recording, Sheina Schochet of @thriveandshinewellness shares some fundamental building blocks of any healthy relationship. Sheina had some incredible lines and quotes, but one of our favorites was "STOP SHOULDING YOURSELF." So many people feel shame and guilt because they think they "should" be doing, saying, or behaving in a certain way. Unrealistic expectations can often trigger emotional issues. Aired on May 27th, 2019. Sheina takes an eclectic and person-centered approach, incorporating different therapies to tailor it to her clients needs. Sheina helps her clients develop the tools to troubleshoot using various tools including CBT, SFBT, and Mindfulness. CBT - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is all about how our thoughts affect our feelings, which affects our actions/behaviors. Thoughts are powerful! We will work to understand them, challenge them, and change them when needed. SFBT - Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is about building awareness and implementing change (relatively) quickly so that you can start seeing results quicker and faster. Mindfulness - Taking a moment to step back and be present is often underrated. Where is her practice? How does right on your couch while dinner is in the oven sound? Or on your lunch break at the office? Sheina is a big advocate for online therapy, which is pretty new, but is empirically supported (that means researchers studied it and found that it works as well as, and for some people better than, traditional therapy). It is especially great for busy moms and professionals. You have more scheduling flexibility, don’t need to sit in traffic, and don’t have to go through that sometimes awkward waiting room process in an unfamiliar office setting. You get to literally be in your physical comfort zone while pushing your limits for personal growth. And you don’t have to worry about if you live “close enough”. Sheina works with women all over New York, Florida, and abroad.
